What is an Autoresponder?
An Autoresponder is a program or service that allows you to automatically send pre-written emails to anyone at anytime. It is basically a sequential automated email system. You write messages, load it on your Autoresponder, set the time difference between emails being sent out, then leave your Autoresponder to finish the job. You can then get people to start the email sequence by sending a blank email to your Autoresponders email address or complete a form at your website.

Email may be fast becoming the preferred means of business communications and marketing, but, according to Karen Fegarty, it is only an effective tool if your messages are getting through to your opt-in clients. This is not always the case.
"You can find a lot of data that shows that information is not getting through by email, and the impact that has on any given business. AOL currently blocks about 80 per cent of all email to its users, data from Return Path suggests, on average, 22 per cent of legitimate opt-in email wasn’t delivered to user inboxes, and the costs to business of incorrectly blocked opt-in email is expected to reach $419 million by 2008."

It’s true that “content is king,” but equally important to success in online marketing of any kind is contact. Not just the one time “flash in the pan” type either. You need to form relationships with your potential customers, and maintain it on a day to day basis. Remember, just as with content, good solid contact will get you good solid sales.

A powerful reason for making the switch from using the unlimited autoresponders that come free with your web hosting account to paying a monthly fee for an autoresponder service is the building of customer relationships through sequential autoresponders.
Although many web hosts offer unlimited autoresponders, each autoresponder is only capable of sending one response. Building business relationships that will increase your sales begins with the use of sequential autoresponders from a paid autoresponder service.

1. Ask visitors to subscribe to your e-zine. It’s a good idea to also give them a freebie when they subscribe.
2. Have them sign-up to get access to download a free ebook. The subject of the ebook should be related to your target audience.
3. Give your visitors a free membership inside your member’s only web site. Have them sign-up to receive a user name and password.

I remember reading time and time again when I first begun my Internet Marketing adventure that a mailing list was one of "the" best ways to generate larger amounts of money online. So I wasted no time in implementing a mailing list for my businesses. Or business (to start with).
There are a few ways you can implement this idea into your own business.

A chained auto-responder is a sequence of emails that gets delivered automatically when someone subscribes to this autoresponder.
It is used in marketing to deliver mini-advertisements, teaser courses, demo extracts, testimonials or stepped sales letters, and all of this is designed to get the client eventually to click on the “buy me now” link for the main product that is being promoted.
There are three main problems with chained auto-responders. Avoid these, TEST your linked auto-responders before you inflict them on the general public, and you should see significant increases in your sales.

Perhaps you, like me, have web hosting that includes, free of any extra charge, unlimited autoresponders. That being the case, you might be inclined to balk at any suggestion to start paying for them.
Recently, however, I made the switch to paying a monthly fee for unlimited autoresponders. Am I rich (with money to burn)? Have I lost my mind?
Actually, I consider this move to paid autoresponders to be a wise decision. Here are some reasons why you might want to pay for an autoresponder service.

I have a special new email address. It’s in addition to my primary email address and it’s where I tell online marketers who want my business, to send their mailings.
I didn’t want to do it. I didn’t want anyone to be excluded from the group. I’m sure the online marketers are very nice people with great big hearts. And I’m sure that when I receive those frenzied emails with subjectlines like, “Dina, Last Chance to Attend the Hottest Seminar This Week!” these folks don’t realize that they’ve been relegated to my Not Urgent or Important email account.
