Reality Check: A Straightforward Guide to Keywords and Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
by: Michael Murray, VP of Fathom SEO
Web site owners need to have realistic expectations when it comes to the world of keyword selection.
It’s essential to understand your audience, as well as to aim appropriately at powerful, concise keywords that are not vague or generic—those broad, expansive keywords that rarely attract the audience you are seeking–and lead to disappointing rankings and wasteful expenditures of cash resources.
If you want a healthy return on investment (ROI) with search engine optimization (SEO), your success - or failure - hinges on the keywords you select when combined with other factors like link popularity and web site design.
If your web site has content and design barriers, lacks saturation (a term used to describe how well a site is indexed by search engines) and isn’t found on many other relevant web sites, you’re odds of ranking well are pretty low.
Be careful with keyword research so that you don’t miss excellent opportunities or aim so broadly that you target phrases that will never rank well. Get your act together. Here are 5 tips to guide you along the way in your research. They may help you make good choices, achieve high rankings and bring more traffic (and leads) to your web site.
1. Know your audience and think through your business goals.
Many businesses simply pick keywords out of thin air. They don’t talk to customers or hot prospects in order to determine what might be a useful set of keywords. Your keywords need to match your business strategy. What are your main products? Where are sales lagging? Are there products or services that do well and could soar with SEO? Which products have the highest margins? You should have scores of other questions that make sense for your business. The information should be readily available. If it’s not, you’re way behind in the SEO process.
2. Watch the broad search terms.
Companies make a mistake in this area more than any other place. The keyword landscape is more inviting than a one-hour toy store shopping spree for a child. The excitement forces people to ignore reality. Who can blame them? Wouldn’t it be great to be #1 on Google for “food,” “cars,” “software”? Yes, single words can help drive sales. But they’re difficult to achieve. Link popularity, web site content, site structure and other considerations will impact rankings.
3. Learn how to form search terms.
You can start with “automobile” all you want, but build on your core phrase by adding on other words like “suppliers,” “products,” “services,” “companies,” “firms.”
4. Analyze log files.
Often overlooked and easily underplayed, web site log files reveal much about the way people search. You can generate many keyword and search phrase ideas just by examining the data with an intuitive sense.
5. Know your link popularity.
First you need to know your competitors - compare their link popularity to yours. How far do you need to go to catch up? Study who else links to their site. Would those web sites be willing to link to your site? Would you be required to do a link exchange with them? Use a Link Popularity Check (www.checkyourlinkpopularity.com) service to ascertain how your site is faring with link popularity.

Whether online or offline, small businesses often show little faith in the quality of their service or product. Instead, they tend to focus on the limitations and lower their prices. This natural insecurity can lead to disastrous financial results because lower prices cripple your return on investment.
Rest assured, you will make sales if you research the market, locate a need and provided a quality solution. Do not let insecurity waste the blood, sweat and tears you expended on the business. Instead, you should focus on building your credibility and displaying it on your site.

I attended the SES Expo in San Jose, CA the other day. It was an hour from my home in Larkspur, CA just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Along the way I was thinking this would be really neat to see, a lot of companies doing the same things really, and to see how they play together.

Autoresponder Course : The Automated Marketing Tool
by: David Bell
Autoresponders, also known as mailbots, automatic email and email on demand were derived from the very popular fax on demand and designed to automatically respond to any email message it receives with an automatic response. Autoresponder programs vary from software set up to run with your desktop email program and automatically answer your incoming email to a script that runs on your server. The script may run a Web-based autoresponder system that utilizes a web page form, or it may run with your pop email account on your server. It is programmed to automatically send out a predetermined message when a message is received to a specified script address or email address.
In addition to the standard autoresponder systems, there are also autoresponders that can send an unlimited amount of follow-up messages. These follow up messages can be set up to automatically be sent out at predetermined intervals. In other words, you can set up your autoresponder to automatically send out a new message each day for as many days as you would like.
This powerful technology is currently being used by some of the top online marketers to reach thousands of potential customers. As you may know, it may take up to seven contacts with a potential customer before closing a sale. By setting up an autoresponder and offering a free autoresponder course, you can completely automate a portion of your marketing efforts.
The first step in creating an autoresponder course is to decide upon a subject. Your course should focus on a subject in which you have a great deal of knowledge and target your potential customers.
Once you have selected your subject, you’ll need to make a list of topics. Each topic will represent one lesson. If you have five topics, then you can offer your visitors a free 5-day course. If you have ten topics, then you can offer your visitors a free 10-day course and so on.
Separate each of your topics into course lessons. Your first lesson should welcome your subscriber to your course and explain a little bit about what they are going to learn, followed by the first lesson.
The key to creating a successful autoresponder course is to provide quality information that will be of interest to your target audience. Each daily topic must contain valuable information or your reader may decide to unsubscribe. In addition, make sure you include information in regard to your course such as the lesson number, lesson title, information about your products or services and highlights of the next lesson.
Your course should identify a problem, provide advice in regard to solving the problem and provide the solution with your products or services. Keep in mind, your course should not be written like a sales letter. It must provide quality information written to teach and inform.
After you’ve written your course, you’ll need to transfer your text into an autoresponder. You can find free follow-up autoresponders here:
http://www.getresponse.com/ and http://www.fastfacts.net/
Sign up for a follow-up autoresponder and follow their instructions in regard to setting it up.
Once you’ve gotten your autoresponder set up, your final step will be to place your course information on your web site. This will include a description of your course and a mailto link to your autoresponder.
By offering your visitors a free autoresponder course, you are not only providing them with a great service, but you are also automating a portion of your marketing efforts. This form of free advertising can increase your sales considerably.
I hope this helps in your future marketing decisions.

A powerful reason for making the switch from using the unlimited autoresponders that come free with your web hosting account to paying a monthly fee for an autoresponder service is the building of customer relationships through sequential autoresponders.
Although many web hosts offer unlimited autoresponders, each autoresponder is only capable of sending one response. Building business relationships that will increase your sales begins with the use of sequential autoresponders from a paid autoresponder service.
