When exploring good keyword choices there are several steps one must consider. The most important step is putting your self in the shoes of the type of customer you want to target. Just make a list of the keywords or phrases you think that customer would enter into a search engine or directory when searching for your company or site. A good tool is WordTracker.com which will help you brainstorm different key phrases. Ask friends and associates which words they would use to search for your site on the internet, if they were looking for a site similar to yours.

The Google Jagger Update Part 1
by: Andrew Seidel
Google has recently gone through an update which has seen many websites that had previously held strong rankings vanish from view. There are a few aspects this latest update has focused on. Part 1 focuses on “Reciprocal Linking” and the impact this has had from a search engine positioning perspective.
With many of the updates in the past, site rankings have somewhat fluctuated, but with the most recent Jagger Update, many website owners may still feel stressed, wondering where their websites have vanished to!
Firstly, let me explain why Google has regular updates.
A Google update is a change to the way Google determines rankings of websites listed within its search engine database. The latest update is referred to as the “Jagger Update”.
Google’s main focus has always been to ensure relevance in the return of search engine results. To achieve this, Google periodically makes algorithmic changes to the way it returns results from its search index keeping them as accurate as possible.
The reason Google does this is due to:
- Technology changes and the type of websites created using these technologies.
- Unethical manipulation of search engine rankings by website owners or SEO specialists.
In the latest Jagger update, a few areas have been targeted to improve search engine results.
I will cover these in subsequent articles. The first of these is Reciprocal Link Building.
Reciprocal Link Building
Reciprocal Link Building is where two websites place an external link to each other’s site,
i.e. Website A points to website B. Website B links to website A.
Google has always placed a lot of weight on is the popularity of one website linking to another. The reasoning behind this is that if a particular website has many links from different domains pointing to it, then this website must be important. This concept is behind Google Page Rank. In essence, this concept is a good measure for determining the relevance of a website, because website owners will often provide a relevant link from their website to different websites they feel would benefit their visitors.
Many website owners and SEO specialists would (and still do) use the Reciprocal Linking method to inflate a website’s ranking.
The problem with this being such an important measure in Google’s eyes is that this was not difficult to manipulate. Many companies offer “reciprocal link building” as a method to improve a website’s rankings. One of the major problems has been that many of the links added in the Reciprocal Link building schemes have no relevance to the websites they are linking from or to, e.g. a Search Engine Positioning Company swapping links with a Pet Food Distributor.
Google still rightly maintains that external website linking is a good measure of popularity, and has focused algorithmic changes around ensuring their rankings are not so easily manipulated.
Some of the changes include:
- Relevance of the link from website A, to website B, i.e. Website A is a Beauty Therapist, and links to website B which offers skin care products.
- Anchor text* in the link, and the relevance of that text associated with the website that the link is pointing to, as well as the page it derives from. *Anchor text is the text you view within a link, i.e. Web Design Sydney
- The age of a link on a particular web page.
- How many links are on a web page, as well as the age of the links weighed against the web page they are linked from.
- The rate at which links appear or disappear from a web page over time.
One thing these changes prove, is that manipulating search engine rankings through unnatural or unethical methods will only cause websites to vanish very quickly like many websites in the most recent Jagger Update
The latest Jagger Update continues to have components associated with aging delay, which cements the fact that SEO is no longer a short term solution, but one that will gain benefits over time (providing it is done properly).

QUALITY Content Is King
by: Todd Levi
Adding quality content helps to increase your site’s traffic and gives people a reason to come back. There are numerous reason why adding content to your site is important and this article will discuss just why this is.
One of the most effective and most dependable ways to increase the amount of traffic to your website is to offer more quality content. I’m sure you have heard it said that on the Internet, content is king. Well, it’s true! There are numerous reason why adding content to your site is important and this article will discuss just why this is.
Getting away from the “business card website”: A lot of websites are simply avenues to allow a company to have a web presence and are essentially just a form of an online business card or brochure. This type of web site gives nothing to the viewer accept a short iformational about what the company does and how to contact them. To get new web viewers and to keep viewers coming back you need to give them a reason to, creating qaulity content frequently is just that reason.
The Benifits of Original Content: When creating your content remember that original is better! There are easy ways to add content that is specific to your site, but allready found on the web through numerous online article repositories. While these are still good resources to use, using these alone will not benifit the overall goal of having original content. Search engines look at the the number of sites that have the exact same content as less of a factor when deciding there overall rankings. However: submitting a selected number of articles to such directories will help you get your information published on relevant sites specific to your keywords and industry. A sample online article repository is found at: articles.com
Making sure to include qaulity links: One important aspect of your site that factors into search engine’s view of your site is relevance. By containing links to relevant sites in your content, and your website overall, you will show the search engines exactly what your site is trying to accomplish and make your site more relevant for particular search queries. This is especially true when it comes to human edited directories you wish to be found in.
Ideas for Creating content for your site:
+ Industry specific news and relevant happenings makes great content ideas.
+ Product reviews make a great source of content and help introduce sellable items and services.
+ User forums are a great way to let the site viewers help you create related content for your website.
+ Company background information and company news are ways to generate more content and drive more traffic.
+ Create an article section on your website and include guest writers, articles from repositories, and always include your own unique articles as well.
+ RSS feeds are a great way to add constanly updating content to your website through every changing, industry specific news and events brought in by other sources. We will get into this method at a later date, in another posting.
Just remember one thing, the more content the better becasue Content Is King!

Ready for more tips on how to make your AdWords campaign work more effectively for your business?
Start with a Modest Budget
Just as you should start with a smaller geographical region, start with a modest campaign budget. Spend a few days or a few weeks fine tuning your ads before you really decide to pump up the budget. The more “finished” and tuned your ads are before you start spending serious amounts of money on advertising, the better.

If your site isn’t found in the search engines, it is probably because the robots couldn’t deal with it. It could be something as simple as not being able to find the site, or it may be more complicated issues involving the robot’s not being able to crawl the site or figure out what your pages are all about.

How to Select a Search Engine Optimization Company
by: Tom Bishop
A Search engine optimization company works on watching and optimizing the position of your search engine results. They can be a great asset to your company by providing their knowledge and expertise in this area. Before you hire a company, it’s crucial to know what to look for.
One factor is the company’s way of raising the popularity of your search engines. Any company that uses cloaked, doorway or bridge pages should not be used. This could lead to your website being removed from the index, or at least harshly fined as it greatly goes against most policies. A cloaked page is what it sounds like - a hidden page that comes up when a search engine spider finds it. A search engine spider is a program that detects and indexes pages on a search engine. If it finds the information it is looking for - legitimately or illegitimately - the pages ratings are boosted. Doorway and bridge pages are similar, but they are usually on a different server that sends visitors to one page and the spider to another.
Doorway or bridge pages are similar, but are found on a separate server. A cloaked page is one that is hidden from visitors to your site, and will recognize a search engine spider - a program that recognizes and indexes web pages. The spider goes to the hidden page, reading the information it needs and then falsely raising the position of the search engine. Companies like Google - one of the biggest search engines there is - removes any website from its index if they find out that cloaked pages are being used.
You need a written guarantee that the company will not work with other competitors, as occasionally some will sell their services to others based on the effectiveness of your optimization. This will only undermine the success of your campaign.
The most important thing to consider is the company’s past. Check into their answers to verify their results. Get specific - which search engines have they optimized effectively? Get a report from previous clients. It should show good search engine positions on popular search engines with a variety of keywords. Another place to check is www.searchenginewatch.com/article.php/2156451. This rates the effectiveness of keywords on search engines, which is useful because the popularity can change depending on where you look on the Internet.
Let’s face it - money is always a consideration. In this case it looking for a bargain shouldn’t be the reason you choose a company. If your company doesn’t have the funds, you should give it some time. It can sometimes be possible to find a more affordable company by looking at newer businesses, but get references from them too! Don’t assume that it will be okay and jump in.
Contact any references you are given, and don’t take on any company that makes an excuse about giving them out. Think of some questions ahead of time, and ask the previous clients about their reliability, dealings and overall experience. You can even ask about the changes they were advised to make to the site, and if these affected visitors to the site or profitability of the company. Remember - this is an integral part of your business, and choosing a company that’s going to raise your search engine status and ultimately your profits is an important decision.
Keywords: selecting a search engine optimization company, marketing campaign, keywords, cloaking, doorway pages, bridge pages.

by: Wayne Hagerty
We all know about search engines the widely known Internet Marketing monster. What does it take to get listed in search engines and receive high traffic?
Lets start off with the Domain name. If you are planning on starting your own web site and have not chosen a domain name as of yet and want to get targeted traffic from the search engine marketing then consider a good keyword domain that is related to your web site topic. This simple technique has proven to work with search engine marketing for indexing (position) and overall keyword weighting. Now there are other factors to get considered by search engines like properly preparing your meta tags in the html. The meta tags that still hold importance to search are Title Tags, and Description Tags. Keyword tags do not hold the same importance like it use to. Another important factor is on page keywords, these are relevant keywords found on the body text of your website and choosing the proper keywords with relevance, keyword weighting (4-7%), as well as keyword proximity will be the difference between your website getting listed page 40 or page 2 or even page one in search engines.
Another important internet marketing puzzle piece for search engines is link building. This is the process were you get your website links listed on other important websites. There are different ways do accomplish this - reciprocal links and one way linking. Reciprocal linking involves you trading links with other webmasters, be sure that your website topic is relevant to link partners site. The other link building option is one way linking
