by: Gley Yahya
Gauging link popularity is a practice that most search engines use when they rank sites for specific keywords and phrases. In order to keep their clients happy, search engines are always developing ways to make their results more relevant. In the last couple of years, Search engines start giving more weight to Links between sites with similar themes because they see links as a vote of confidence and trust for your site and, consequently, they tend to have a positive effect on your site positioning.

Keys to Increase Your Website Search Engine Ranking
by: Peter Tarrida del Marmol
When we are talking about search engine ranking, the first thing you need to think about is the market place. Many people ask themselves, how many keywords should I put in my anchor text? What is the keyword density that I should have on my page? Should I use 300 words on my copy or should I use 500 words? Can I use flash? How many keywords should I put in my “alt” text? Etc…
Here is a general statement: magic numbers do not exist. The most important thing you can understand as a search engine optimization expert is the following: algorithms change. Just when you think you understand what is going to make you number one for a search phrase in a search engine, something could change, and you might have to spend months or years trying to find out the engineering of the algorithm again.
It is better not to try to reverse engineer the algorithm and do something much easier instead, observe your competitors. All you need to do is to understand what elements are your competitors using that are making them rank on the top positions.
Let’s see what those things are:
- Number and quality of inbound links pointing to your site
- Keyword density
- Fresh content
The first thing to observe from your competitor’s sites is their back link index. This means the number of sites that have a link pointing to their website. You can easily measure it by going to Google and type: “link://www.yourcompetitorssite.com“. But it would be a mistake to do this only on Google, as Google discriminates sites much more than other search engines. Yahoo and MSN are much more accurate for measuring the back link index.
Part of the observation should be not only what the links say, but where the links come from. Think on what is the category where those links come from. If you start to see a recurring pattern, you should start actively searching for links coming from that category.
Some marketers use special software for robotic content creation. They generate thousands of pages with links pointing to their sites. This practice can be dangerous, as Google may penalize unnatural linking or violations of their terms of service. And what happens is that those links do not look natural. One day one site may have 50 links and the following day have 2.050 links, which all say the same thing and come from the same IP address.
If you understand how to observe, this will never happen to you. You will learn how to look at your competitors, and observe how they are getting linked to.
The second thing you need to observe is the keyword density of your competitors. How many times should we repeat our main keyword? In which part of the web page should our main keywords be mentioned? There is no magic number, again it’s all about observing and measuring against your competitors. But what should we measure?
- Meta tags
- Alt tags
- Titles
- Names of the images on the page
- Highlights: h1, h2, h3…
- Frequency and position of the keywords on the body text
Each one of these items should be measured independently. There are tools to run keyword density against your competitors. If you run them against the top 3 or 5 sites, you may start to understand the secrets of top rankings.
Again, your keyword density needs to look natural; otherwise you may fail in over optimization. This is when you use keywords too often or too early. If you look unnatural, your page ranks will suffer as a result.
The key to success is to understand what Google likes about their top 5 pages, and to apply this to your own website promotion.
The last thing to observe is how much fresh content do the top sites have. If they have many articles and they are continuously adding new content to their sites, then it is clear that the search engines like content and are ranking better those sites which have more and more updated information.
People that surf the web are usually searching for information, so content is the “fuel” of internet traffic. If you want to attract many potential customers to your site, then you need to make sure that you provide enough content which is relevant to their interests.

Many people decide to spend a lot of money putting their advert all over the internet in the hopes that their web traffic will sky-rocket. Most people end up disappointed. Visit Google, Yahoo, MSN or one of the lesser search engines, and you get a few million results for just about any search term. Despite this impressive depth of results, most users consider only a few of the WebPages being pointed to. A lot of research indicates that most searchers exit search engine result pages to visit one of the top three results. That raises the question: What about the remaining million plus results?

Search engines are frugal things. (Froogle, too, haha! Sorry, lame joke) They take many, many things into consideration when ranking your pages. Below are some things you should do to be sure you’re ranked as high as possible.
Keywords
Go for keyphrases, not single keywords. Unless you want to spend the next 3 months trying to break into the first page for a single keyword, focus on keyphrases. Besides, most searchers search for two or more words. Single keywords just don’t provide the targeted results searchers are looking for.

11 Reasons to Submit This Article to an Ezine
by: Hans Hasselfors
What’s an article anyway, and why would I want to submit one to an ezine? That was a two-fold question and will require two answers.
An ezine article is usually composed of approximately 500 words on a single subject that would be of interest to your target market. At the end of the article, you should include a “resource box.” This box should provide such things as your name, the name of your company, your web site address, email address, and a small blurb about your product/service.
Writing an article is not hard work. All it requires is some research and note taking. Use any of multiple sources to find information about the topic that you choose to write about. Then write your article in your own words using the notes that you took during your research. It’s not difficult and it’s something that you learned to do early in school (grade school probably). Write in a conversational tone. Write like you are talking to your best friend.
Now, I’ll answer the second question. The reasons to submit this article to an ezine are varied, but not difficult to understand. They all boost your bottom line.
1. The submission of the article will help identify your business (web site) in the Internet marketplace. This is normally called “branding.”
2. Article submission provides publicity, virtually free.
3. Someone may like your writing style and hire you to write articles or ebooks for them.
4. The published article will drive traffic to your web site.
5. If the publisher of the ezine that you submit your article to maintains an archive, your article may be read many months later. Traffic may still be driven to your site this way.
6. People will come to know you as an expert on your subject.
7. You might get your article published in free ebooks that are distributed all over the web. This will drive more traffic to your web site.
8. This will help you become a trusted vendor of information.
9. If you allow anyone to publish your article or email it to a friend, you will gain further exposure for free.
10. Webmasters may read your article and display it on their web site. You get additional free exposure.
11. If you send out an ezine, you could offer to swap articles with other ezine publishers for free. This provides more publicity without expense.
So, there are quite a few benefits that you could receive from publishing small articles like this one. If that isn’t enough reasons for publishing your own articles, I don’t know what else you’d need. Don’t forget to provide enough valuable information. The more knowledge you supply, the more valuable you become. Provide real value and you will always have people clamoring for more.
