The fairy tale existance of Google is starting to experience shockwaves.
So, what’s the source of these shockwaves? Click fraud. As my readers know, I’ve written several articles on the subject of click fraud, suggesting that since it’s the market leader, Google should take a more proactive approach with the problem of click fraud.
Until now, Google has been mostly quiet about the subject, issuing this single statement to the Securities and Exchange Commission:

A lot of website owners work tirelessly at increasing their traffic. They submit to FFA pages and classified sites. They participate in startup programs and pop under exchanges. There is no end to the gimmicks they will try, all in the hopes that they’ll get more customers.

I knew things were bad at DMOZ. But I guess I didn’t realize how bad, until I started eavesdropping on a few forums, and reading the avalanche of e-mails I received on the subject.
When it takes up to two years to get a web site listed, there’s a serious problem. When perfectly qualified web sites are rejected for no other reason than the fact the editor considers them serious competition to his or her own site, there’s a serious problem.

Never mind the irritating, but effective, pop-up window. There is another type of interruption advertising that is much more subtle, much less annoying, and just as effective.
It is the negative interruption.
A negative interruption is when an expected pattern is removed or “restrained” from an expectation causing a noticeable non conformity.
